HighScope Indonesia School organized an educational visit to the May 12 Tragedy Museum at Universitas Trisakti. The visit took place over three days, on August 27, 28, and 29, 2024, with a total of 175 students accompanied by 8 teachers. This visit was part of the school’s effort to introduce students to the history of Indonesia’s Reformasi movement, providing an in-depth explanation of the background, chronology, silent witnesses, and impact of the May 12, 1998, tragedy. This event, as explained by the museum educator, involved acts of violence and riots in Jakarta, marking one of the darkest moments in Indonesia’s history and having a significant impact on the country’s social and political changes to this day.
During the visit, students were shown various documents, collections, and video footage that documented the event, providing a glimpse of what occurred at that time. The students appeared enthusiastic and eager during the museum visit and actively asked questions related to the May 12, 1998, tragedy to learn more about the factors that led to the incident.
The visit continued with a tour of the historical trail in front of Building M and the May 12, 1998, tragedy monument. While at the historical trail and the monument, the guide provided explanations about the reasons behind the creation of the trail and the monument.
Through this activity, HighScope Indonesia School hopes that students will not only gain historical knowledge but also develop empathy and social responsibility as the future generation of the nation. The event concluded with a group photo session in front of the May 12, 1998, tragedy monument at Universitas Trisakti before the group departed.
