Pilgrimage to the Graves of Trisakti Reform Heroes: Commemorating the May 12, 1998 Tragedy

Jakarta, May 7, 2025 — To commemorate the 27th anniversary of the May 12, 1998 Tragedy, Universitas Trisakti held a pilgrimage to the graves of the Reform Heroes: Elang Mulia Lesmana, Heri Hertanto, and Hendriawan Sie, located at Al-Kamal Public Cemetery and Tanah Kusir Public Cemetery. The event took place on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, as a tribute to the students who gave their lives in the struggle for democracy in Indonesia.

The pilgrimage was attended by the Rector of Universitas Trisakti along with university leadership, representatives from the Student Executive Board, and various student organizations. Also present were Indonesia’s Minister of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises and Chairman of the Trisakti Alumni Association, Maman Abdurrahman, as well as the families of the three Reform Heroes, who were deeply moved by the reflective and emotional atmosphere.

In his speech, the Rector emphasized the importance of upholding the spirit of reform fought for by the students at the cost of their lives.

“This is not merely a commemoration, but a moment to reaffirm our commitment to democracy, justice, and standing with the people,” he stated.

Maman Abdurrahman, as both an alumnus and a public figure currently serving as Chairman of the Trisakti Alumni Association and Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs, remarked that the spirit of sacrifice shown by Elang, Heri, and Hendriawan must continue to inspire younger generations in their pursuit of just and principled change.

The event concluded with a prayer and the scattering of flower petals at the heroes’ graves, followed by a group photo session. The pilgrimage was part of a series of events commemorating the May 12, 1998 Tragedy at Universitas Trisakti.
