Guest Lecture on TL Dating for Geothermal Exploration

Thermoluminescence (TL) dating is a method for determining the absolute age of rocks by measuring the intensity of sunlight (UV) radiation absorbed by the rock and recorded in the lattice structure of the rock’s crystal electrons. There are several methods for dating rocks, including U-Pb dating, K-Ar dating, carbon dating, and others. Thermoluminescence (TL) dating has become a very promising alternative due to its lower cost, allowing for broader and more cost-effective sample analysis.

TL dating has been utilized in various fields, including archaeology, structural deformation analysis, mineral mining exploration, and geothermal exploration. In relation to the application of TL dating in geothermal exploration, the Geological Engineering Program at FTKE, Universitas Trisakti, in collaboration with the Geological Engineering Program at UPN-Veteran Yogyakarta, organized a Sharing Knowledge event on the topic “Thermoluminescence (TL) Dating for Geothermal Exploration,” featuring Prof. Isao Takashima from Akita University, Japan, as the expert speaker in this field. The Sharing Knowledge event was held on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, in Room AD-201, 2nd Floor, Building D, Universitas Trisakti. The event was highly interactive and conducive, attended by lecturers from FTKE and the Geological Engineering Program at Universitas Trisakti, Dr. Ir. Dwi Fitri Yudiantoro M.T. from the Geological Engineering Program at UPN Veteran Yogyakarta, Amin Rinjani from PT. Geoservice, and of course, Geological Engineering students from Universitas Trisakti, especially those specializing in geothermal exploration.

The opening and welcome remarks were delivered by the Vice Dean 1 of FTKE Universitas Trisakti, Dr. Ir. Suryo Prakoso, S.T., M.T. A momento was also presented to the speaker, Prof. Isao Takashima, by the Head of the Geological Engineering Program, Dr. Ir. Suherman Dwi Nuryana, S.T., M.T., and a momento for Dr. Ir. Dwi Fitri Yudiantoro M.T. was presented by the Deputy Head of the Geological Engineering Program at Trisakti, Muhammad Apriniyadi, S.Si, M.Sc. The event was moderated by Mira Meirawaty, S.T., M.T., a petroleum lecturer from the Geological Engineering Department at Trisakti. Several other lecturers also attended and participated in the Sharing Knowledge event, including Dr. Ir. Afiat Anugrahadi, M.S., Dr. Ir. Dewi Syavitry, M.Sc., and Dr. Ir. Yarra Sutadiwiria, M.T.

Through this Sharing Knowledge event, the Geological Engineering Program and FTKE Universitas Trisakti demonstrated their commitment to actively contributing to the development of the geothermal industry as an alternative renewable energy source in Indonesia. Hopefully, similar events can continue and support the three pillars of higher education (education, research, and community service) in the field of geothermal research.
