REPOST NASIONAL KONTAN
Awareness of reducing carbon emission footprints is increasing. Not only in the corporate sector, but now the trend of purchasing carbon credits is also spreading to the education sector.
Recently, Universitas Trisakti, through the Trisakti Sustainability Centre (TSC), in collaboration with PT Aicon Global Indonesia, purchased 86 tCO2e carbon credits.
This carbon purchase coincided with the inauguration of Prof. Juniati Gunawan MSi PhD as a Professor at Universitas Trisakti. A total of 86 participants who attended participated in buying carbon credits. The purchase was made by PT Digital Lestari Indonesia (Carbon Share) from the carbon units owned by PLN Nusantara Power.
“This small step is a form of our concern, and we hope to motivate many parties to care and take real action to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the negative impacts of climate change,” said Prof. Juniati Gunawan to Kontan on Monday (27/5).
Although the amount of emission reduction achieved is not significant, she considers this an effort towards change pursued by the Trisakti Sustainability Centre. Other efforts include advising guests not to send congratulatory flower boards that would become waste, suggesting instead that the funds be used to donate for tree planting.
The Professor of Accounting and Sustainability Reporting also mentioned the role of an accountant in supporting the decarbonization process. “An accountant must be able to change and play an active role in improving the environment by starting to calculate the impact of each activity, which should eventually be reported in financial statements,” she said.
She hopes that her actions can inspire various parties to start engaging in decarbonization. Although the carbon reduction achieved is not significant, the effort towards change must begin.
